Crash Course in Copyright - http://www.utsystem.edu/OGC/IntellectualProperty/cprtindx.htm#top

                        Someone owns just about everything
Fair use lets you use their things
                          - But not as much as you'd like to
Sometimes you have to ask for permission
Sometimes you are the owner - think about that!

2.1) What is a copyright?  - http://www.eff.org/pub/Intellectual_property/copyright.faq

This article is Copyright 1994 by Terry Carroll.

A copyright is a right of intellectual property, whereby authors obtain,
for a limited time, certain exclusive rights to their works.  In the
United States, copyright is exclusively federal law, and derives from the
"copyright clause" of the Constitution (Art. 1, sec. 8, cl. 8), which
provides Congress with the power "to promote science and the useful arts,
by securing for limited times to authors ... the exclusive right to their
... writings."

What is Copyright? - http://www.cancopy.com/copyright/index.html

The Canadian Copyright Act became law in January 1924 and was left
virtually unchanged until 1988, when it was amended in a first phase of
copyright reform. A second phase of copyright reform was completed in
1997 when Bill C-32, an Act to amend the Copyright Act, received
Royal Assent and was proclaimed law.

Rights established by the Copyright Act give copyright owners control
over their creations, including the exclusive right to authorise reproduction
of their works and decide how, and by whom, they are used. Creators
are entitled to benefit from their works financially, whether their work is
photocopied (as in a page from a novel), or reprinted (as in a short story
                      republished in a new collection).
