Title: Finding Cuba: a writers photo journey

Subject: photos/slides and hints about being a traveller and writing in a foreign paradise.

The slide show will reveal different Cubas: rainforest treks; the sea’s imprint; authentic colonial

cities; and the romance of Havana. Far from the one dimensional Cuba of tourist brochures, Cuba

is a vibrant, varied island. Challenges for the writer-photographer emerge. As I go through the

slide show, we can discuss “writing place and culture,” which are the foundation of travel writing.

Always, travellers translate what we see and experience; we’re always on the outside peering in,

always a voyeur of sorts. Yet the raison d’être for both readers and writers of travel literature lies in the

insights gained through the people one meets and the experiences one has. Readers expect a pay‐off and

writers must create our own maps leading to the treasure.
